Important Announcement About Anne

Hey all,

Most of you have probably heard the news by now, but I know we've got a few stragglers here who haven't made it to Twitter, FB, or any of the fan forums. For those people, and for posterity, I'm sorry to have to announce that Anne McCaffrey will NOT be able to attend Dragon*Con this year.

About a week ago, Anne went to the hospital with some chest pains, which were later diagnosed to be some sort of minor heart attack.

The Dragonlady is FINE, and it's my understanding that she's in very, very good hands at the hospital. However, for obvious reasons, travel -- especially transatlantic travel -- is going to be a no-go for the foreseeable future.

I know we're all disappointed by this, and I'm sure no one is more disappointed than Anne herself, who I know was really, really looking forward to making the convention this year. I think there are some tentative plans for us to put together some kind of get well card for everyone to sign; the details on that probably won't really coalesce until D*C itself.

I'll try to get our schedule updated, if not in the next few minutes, then by the end of the day.

In the meantime, please feel free to leave your good thoughts and well-wishes here, on FB, or anywhere you'd like us to see and convey them. And if you've got any questions, don't hesitate to ask, as always!

Weyrfest 2011 Schedule!


I am so sorry, guys, that I haven't had this posted until now. Today I made the mistake of writing on our FB page that I was having a slow day at work and would be able to get our schedule posted ASAP.

Within MINUTES, I was buried in script revisions. Sigh. Doing WORK at work? Who knew!

Anyway. Here it is, fresh and shiny and hot off the digital presses! If you haven't heard it by now, you should definitely know that Anne McCaffrey will be returning as our guest of of honor! We are so, so, SO excited to see her for the first time since 2008. We're also very excited to welcome internationally recognized, multi-award-winning artist Michael Whelan, who has created some of the most memorable and timeless art of this or any genre.

Todd McCaffrey will be back (duh!), as will Jody Lynn Nye. Michael Whelan will be joined by his fellow artists Janny Wurts and Don Maitz, and Anne will be in terrific company with Elizabeth Moon, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, and S.M. Stirling. We've even got a bevy of publishers and editors: Jody's husband and writer/publisher/editor/teacher/whoknowswhatallelse Bill Fawcett, Toni Weisskopf of Baen Books, and Shelly Shapiro of Del Rey will be along as well.

But where would all those authors, artists, and editors be without music to motivate them? Have no fear: Emerald Rose will be here!

Yeah. That enough for you? I hope so!

Before we jump into the schedule, there are a few things I want to point out.

There will not be a costume contest this year. I know Jody promised that if at least 20 people showed up to this year's contest, the winner's name would appear in one of her books. That was before we knew that Anne was coming! A lot of extra planning is required to make the schedule sync with the Dragonlady's needs and availability; given that plus the low turnout we've had for the costume contest the past few years, it was simply not tenable to put the contest on the '11 schedule.

I'm so sorry to anyone who's disappointed! If it's any consolation, Jody has generously offered to fulfill her promise next year. And we always, ALWAYS need costumed participants in the parade!

This schedule is still tentative. Yes, we're only a month shy of the convention now, but Dragon*Con reserves the right to make changes at any time. For that matter, changes may need to be made AT the convention! If that happens, we will try to make an announcement in advance, and will change the signage outside our room. Furthermore, the convention posts updates, cancellations, rescheduled panels, etc. in The Daily Dragon, which is available every day at any number of places throughout the convention. Finally, our Twitter page and our Facebook page will be updated as time and a decent internet connection permit.

I'm sure I'll have more notes and thoughts in the near future, but it's late and this director is very very tired! If you all have any questions, please don't hesitate to post them here, on Twitter, on Facebook, or through email. We'll get to them as soon as we can!

AMCW on Facebook!

There is a big fat update post -- including the schedule! -- forthcoming a little later today. In the meantime, I got off my ass and made a Facebook page! ya rly!

It would be pretty rad if you crazy kids could go and add your likes, and then maybe, you know. Add your pictures and stories and art and what not. Imagine: all of that Perny goodness in one place. It shall be glorious!

Biggest Event Other than Anne being at con this year

Costume Contest !!!
Remember last year Jody said that if we get 20 participant she would put the winner's name in a book, which is pretty amazing, So I hope everyone shows up to the costume contest and if you need shoulder knots or badges for a pern character my sister does custom made ones and you can contact her at manxldy@yahoo.com. But no matter what make sure you make it to this event in a costume from any of Anne's worlds to count and we can really pull together.

Dragon Con Parade

Greetings all!

I and my wife have been coming to Dragon Con every other year now since 2005 and love it! Although I may be just a bit bias I think the folks of the Anne McCaffrey's Worlds Track (AKA Weyr Fest) are some of the best! 

The last time we came (2009) we were given the honor of carrying the banner for the group in the Dragon Con parade, I noticed then that it might be easier to carry the sign if it were attached (non-permanently) to a pole of some sort. 

This year we will have a little weyrling in tow so we will be driving to Atlanta and thus have a bit more room to bring stuff.  If nobody minds I would like to fashion something to carry the sign and to help make it more visible to folks in the crowd.  (This is by no means a bid to carry the banner again this year, just to make it easier for whoever does get chosen).
All I would need are the dimensions of the banner and what material it is made of (I remember it being a light weight cloth last time).  If that sounds good pass the word on to me here or tweet me on twitter (Silvanus).

Volunteer, please

Please can I get an answer before prices go up on July 15th? I've been asking for months if my mom could be a volunteer at the Pern room - she was a nurses aide when she worked and she is a hard worker (being a truck driver after that) - so she would make a great volunteer. Please let me know - I need to bring her because my health has really deteriorated and I need someone around at all times.

Charity Auction - Some really cheap items (on facebook though)

Note: Tomorrow we will be adding Pern badges (one hall, one hold, on weyr of you choice painted on clay made into a pin or a magnet or Keychain) there will one of each type to bid on starting at $1 and we will also have one entry for a knot of your choice (journeymans, apprentice, masters, wyerleader, etc, and in colors of choice) starting bid at $2.
The Charity Auction is on facebook and it's for a great cause most things are starting price of 1-5 dollars (the first few and last few are from stores and were made for the auction - mainly jewelry), there is also women's clothing some never been worn, and brand name baby clothes, a 4 GB flashdrive, and also a couple of Antiques donated by Michael Cormier and priced at about 5% there real worth.
